It's a new month, so it's time to post the comments from the month just ended.
My comments on Two nominees for Outstanding Nature Documentary both examine climate change at Booman Tribune.

Modified from 'Chasing Coral' versus 'Yosemite' — two nominees for Outstanding Nature Documentary both examine climate change at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.
Here is Tell Me How Long Music Video Feat. Kristen Bell from Netflix.
Next, my favorite instrumental from the soundtrack, An Alien World.
My comments on Imaginary Monsters and the Uses of Chaos at Clusterfuck Nation.
"[A] long emergency of exogenous events so overwhelming that we dare not even debate them publicly. These are climate change, the crack-up of a debt-based money system, the winding–down of techno-industrial economy, and the ecological destruction of the only planet that human beings call home."
Last month was the tenth anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, when we were partying like it was 1929. There were a lot of retrospectives of the event, many of which asked if we were about to do it again. The potential certainly is there for another recession to start in the next year.
One of the ill non-events of the previous crisis was the non-prosecution of most of the people responsible. Other than Bernie Madoff, Abacus Bank was the only U.S. bank to face criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Instead of being too big to fail, Abacus was small enough to jail. The story was nominated for both an Oscar and an Emmy. It lost the first but could still win the second tonight at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
Speaking of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards, several nominees examine climate change and the resulting amplification of hurricanes. Both the Netflix movie "Chasing Coral" and the PBS "Nature" episode "Yosemite" have three nominations and are competing against each other in two categories, Outstanding Nature Documentary and Outstanding Music and Sound. Also, coverage of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria earned nominations, recognizing the destruction caused by extreme weather, which in Harvey's case was definitely made worse by climate change.
My comment on 'Charlottesville: Race and Terror' tied for most nominations at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards at Booman Tribune.
Attribution and more nominees for the tip jar
CNN also had a nominee examining Charlottesville. "The Morning After Charlottesville" from "State of the Union with Jake Tapper" on CNN is contending for Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis. Competing against it are "Special Counsel Appointed to Oversee Trump-Russia Investigation" from "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC, "All In America: Chicago" from "All In with Chris Hayes" on MSNBC, "NFL Town Hall: Patriotism, The Players and The President" from "Anderson Cooper 360o" on CNN, and "High Alert: North Korea" from "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" on ABC. Here is one of the segments from the show CNN has uploaded to YouTube: Charlottesville mayor's full CNN interview.
Also, four CNN segments were nominated for Outstanding Live Interview, "Jake Tapper and Kellyanne Conway" on "The Lead With Jake Tapper," which took place in the aftermath of Charlottesville, two from "Anderson Cooper 360°," "Anderson Cooper Interviews Janet Porter" and "Faces of Grief: Sutherland Springs Pastor & Heather Melton," the latter of which is also about a mass shooting, and "Chris Cuomo Interviews Las Vegas Massacre Survivors" on "New Day." "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" provided the fifth nominee "Interview with Sarah Sanders."
Modified from 'Charlottesville: Race and Terror' tied for most nominations at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards with an excerpt added from 14 nominations for 12 reports about Las Vegas Massacre and other mass shootings at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.
My comment on Fishtailing into the Future reposted on Booman Tribune.
When Rick Perry was nominated to lead department he wanted to eliminate but couldn't name, I wrote "I should be more appalled at what Perry's policies are likely to do to the environment, but I can't help but laugh at the sheer irony of Perry as Energy Secretary. Given what the rest of Trump's Cabinet of Deplorables looks like, Perry looks relatively reasonable, if in a conventionally awful way." Speaking of which, Seth Meyers made fun of Rick Perry, snarking about Perry earning a D in Meat at Texas A&M, “How do you get a D in Meat? Are you a Chipotle?” No, he's an Aggie, one who lives down to the stereotype lampooned in Aggie jokes.
My comments on Aftermath as Prologue at Clusterfuck Nation.
I’ve called my fellow liberals out on that. The response I got was that they were mocking him for being a hypocrite and being in the closet, not for being gay as such and that if he were out and supporting equality regardless of party, they wouldn’t do it. I personally don’t engage in that kind of behavior regarding Graham, as I think it’s a bad look and lazy snarking. Instead, I give him faint praise for at least acknowledging that climate change is real and provided appropriate refreshments for a drinking game that doesn’t mock him for that supposed trait. So, any of you who want to toast Graham for his vote, I have just the drinks for you.
By the way, Happy Columbus Day to those who celebrate it and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, Happy Native American Day, and an early Happy Leif Erikson Day to those who wish to celebrate other historical holidays.

I'm going to be a good environmentalist, but maybe a bad person, by recycling my comment on Midweek Cafe and Lounge, Vol. 83.

Glad to have you and the Midweek Cafe and Lounge back. By the time I realized that you weren't posting last week, it was Friday, so it was no longer the middle of the week, so I decided not to sub for you.
As for you intruding into my territory, don't worry as the AMAs are not my thing. On the other hand, the 2018 People's Choice Awards are. Here are the finalists for Music Video of 2018.
My first choice is "This Is America."
I plan on posting videos by finalists as long as the diary is on the rec list.
My second choice is "No Tears Left To Cry."
My third choice is "Idol."
My fourth choice is "Back to You."
My fifth and last choice is "Never Be the Same."

One of the most nominated movies at the People's Choice Awards is Black Panther, so I am going to be a good environmenalist and recycle the Black Panther Shot (Killmonger) from Midweek Cafe and Lounge, Vol. 70.
My comments on Nominees about Las Vegas Massacre and other mass shootings at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards at Booman Tribune.
Attribution and emergency preparedness for the tip jar
Modified from 14 nominations for 12 reports about Las Vegas Massacre and other mass shootings at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.
Writing this entry was an intense and draining experience and I'm sure it was for my readers. For their edification, I recommend my readers review the following video, which I originally embedded in Instructions on how to deal with an active shooter at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.
Good for you that you decided to defy your fear. Mass shootings are like airline crashes; they are rare, but they make news. In contrast, most firearm deaths are suicides and make as much news as traffic fatalities, if that. I actually had someone comment on my personal blog that, since most gun fatalities are self-inflicted, they don't matter much. Tell that to the survivors.
As for the point about video games, well taken. Getting ones aggression out on pixels likely prevents it being taken out on people.
My comment on The Duopoly Swamp, Version 2,746. (Or Thereabouts) at Booman Tribune.
That reminds me of a scene from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
My comment on Lost in Space.
I actually think John Schlifske is right; there will be a recession officially called next year. That doesn't mean that the warning signs aren't already out there. Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy, an event I foreshadowed on Saturday as part of my latest episode of the ongoing tale of the Retail Apocalypse. In addition, as our host detailed on Friday, the Dow fell more than 1200 points (actually close to 1400 points) on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a dead cat bounce on Friday. Technically, that didn't even qualify as a correction, but it is a sign that fear is overtaking greed as the passion governing the markets.
My comment on Midweek Cafe and Lounge, Vol. 86

Tuesday was National Liqueur Day, so I'm recycling the recipes from Rainbow shots from Tipsy Bartender for National Liqueur Day at Crazy Eddie's Motie News. To observe, I'm sharing two of the most popular videos from Tipsy Bartender on YouTube that involve liqueur, in this case, blue curacao. First, the 31 Shot Glass Rainbow Shot Challenge, which was used in the opening of the rest of Skyy's videos for 2015.
Now the video that Skyy refers his viewers to, How to make Rainbow Shots!.
Skyy's are pretty. Emma's, not so much. Brown isn't a color of the rainbow, but that's what she got instead of yellow. I'm sure it tastes just fine.
My comments on Feeling the Heat Yet?
All of those are real chronic problems, but most Americans aren't feeling their direct effects yet. If they are and they're not college students or recent graduates, who can point to their loans, they so far haven't able to trace them back to their sources. Instead, they are seeing indirect effects, like Sears Holdings filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Their response has been to engage in displays of nostalgia, just as they did for Toys R Us. Meanwhile, they keep shopping at Amazon.
Not a bad song choice, although I would have picked "The Heat Is On" by Glenn Frey from "Beverly Hills Cop." Still a good 80s tune.
Speaking of heat, when I read our host's title, I was hoping that he would be writing about the latest IPCC climate report, which is predicting even more dire consequences than previous ones. However, most Americans aren't feeling its effects, that is, if they discount how climate change makes hurricanes stronger. Ask the people in the paths of Florence and Michael about those.
"[B]oth sides of the political aisles are simply choosing different lines of bullshit to throw at us to keep up bickering at each other and not dealing with the real problem" – and the evidence is that most Americans are following along. A Pew Research Center study found Americans agree on few issues, namely the federal budget deficit, violent crime, drug addiction, ethics in government, and the affordability of health care. Meanwhile, the two sides are far apart on the importance of climate change, racism, immigration, econonic inequality, gun violence, and sexism. No surprise, those issues are the sources of most partisan conflict in the U.S. Oh, well, maybe since Republicans and Democrats agree that drug addiction is a problem, they might be able to figure out a solution to the opioid epidemic.
My comments on Lost in Translation.
"[W]e cannot live on phantom debt any longer" -- That reality finally caught up to Sears, who finally declared bankruptcy after earning less and less money and ending up billions of dollars in debt. As for living (and dying) the way our grandparents did, 80,000 Americans died last flu season, the most since 1976 and possibly the most since 1918, the year of the Spanish flu, when an estimated 675,000 Americans died. I'm planning on getting the flu vaccine at my next doctor's visit.
I noticed it was bad at the time and so did the CDC. The agency changed the subject of a special session about nuclear detonation to the flu epidemic this past January. The next month, the CDC declared it the worst flu season since 2009 when the outbreak was not even half over. That it got worse didn't surprise me. That it ended up this bad did.
I quite agree with what you wrote. I call the former CEO Fast Eddie Lamprey because of his draining of the lifeblood of the company. I also plan on writing about it later this week and sharing the link on Friday.

My comments on “Are the Dems Self-punking?”
I've been calling the Kingdom of Saud "our frienemies the Saudis" for more than a decade, ever since I first learned what a frienemy was and connected the word to the numbers of Saudis involved in 9/11. So did Michael Moore, who made it a central idea of "Fahrenheit 9/11." Moore reversed the date for "Fahrenheit 11/9," which is nominated for Best Political Documentary at the 2018 Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. That's putting it on track to be an Oscar contender for Best Documentary feature. Given the mood of the Motion Picture Academy, it might just win if nominated, although I think "RBG" is the favorite. Either would make a political point, just like "Icarus" wining Best Documentary Feature earlier this year.
Elrond, I promised you Monday that I would write more about Fast Eddie Lamprey and post the link today. Here it is: Sam Seder on the Sears bankruptcy, a tale of the Retail Apocalypse. Enjoy!
As for the terrorist(s) behind the pipe bomb attacks, I think it's more likely that they have more in common with the participants in the Charlottesville riot than the Democrats being targeted and false-flagged.

While I have your attention, are you already working on tonight's Midweek Cafe and Lounge? If so, great. If not, may I post instead? I have an idea for a Halloween installment of the series.

I'm seeing a lot of spectacular footage from Michael and I'm sure there's more from Florence. As for wildfire coverage, maybe. I suspect there may be a good local nominee to be had, but I have my doubts about first class national news reports. On the other hand, a nature documentary might be released that would qualify.
